Accountability
An Accountability App That Actually Checks In
Most accountability apps record what you did after the fact. The useful moment is earlier than that — when you are deciding whether to start at all.
What makes an accountability app actually work?
A prompt that arrives from outside your own head, at the moment work should begin. Tracking after the fact records the outcome; it does nothing at the point where the outcome is decided.
This is why a study partner, a manager or a housemate works so reliably. Their presence is a cue you did not have to generate yourself, arriving at a time you cannot silently renegotiate.
Software can approximate that with a scheduled call. What it cannot approximate is a relationship — see what actually works in accountability.
Do I need another person for accountability?
Not necessarily, but you do need something external. The active ingredient is that the cue does not come from the same mind that is trying to avoid the task — a scheduled call supplies that without booking a human.
Human accountability has real advantages: judgement, flexibility, and the social weight of letting someone down. It also has real friction — scheduling, cost, and the awkwardness of asking someone to babysit your workday indefinitely.
An app trades some of the weight for availability. It is there every morning without a calendar invitation.
How is this different from a habit tracker?
A habit tracker logs whether the thing happened. An accountability call happens before it does. The tracker is a record; the call is an intervention at the transition into work.
You can still track habits visually in MaxDex. The difference is the prompt mechanism, not the record-keeping.
- Streaks report yesterday; a call arrives today, at the start of the block
- Check-ins are two-way — you can move a block or name a blocker on the call
- The prompt names a specific first action rather than a habit label
- Missing a day logs it and moves on, with no streak to lose
What happens on a daily check-in?
A short voice call — typically two to three minutes — built from your planner blocks, active goals and recent energy. The morning call names priorities and a first action; the evening one closes the day.
It is a conversation rather than a recording, so you can add a task, move a block, or talk through what is blocking you and have Max act on it during the call.
