What to Do With the Afternoon Slump
Every afternoon, somewhere between one and three, the work gets harder. This is not a discipline problem. It is a documented property of the human circadian system, and you can plan around it.
Why do I crash at 2pm every day?
It is the post-lunch dip, a genuine circadian phenomenon. Monk’s review documents that it appears even when people skip lunch entirely and cannot tell what time it is — so it is driven by the body clock, not by the meal.
The dip is thought to relate to a roughly 12-hour harmonic in the circadian system — a smaller echo of the deep trough that occurs around 4am. That is why it lands at a similar clock time each day and why it feels like sleepiness rather than ordinary fatigue.

Does lunch cause the afternoon slump?
It deepens it rather than causing it. Composition matters more than size: a fast-carbohydrate meal with little protein, fat or fibre produces the sharpest dip, because those three all slow gastric emptying.
There is a second mechanism beyond digestion speed. Fernstrom and Wurtman established that brain serotonin synthesis is regulated by the ratio of tryptophan to other large neutral amino acids competing for the same transport into the brain — and a carbohydrate-only load shifts that ratio in the sleepiness-promoting direction, where a protein-containing meal does not.
So the practical guidance is not "eat less at lunch". It is "do not eat a carbohydrate-only lunch on a day you need the afternoon".
Why is the slump worse when I am under-slept?
Two effects stack. Sleep debt raises baseline sleep pressure so the circadian dip starts from a lower point, and short sleep measurably reduces insulin sensitivity, which makes the same meal produce a bigger drop.
Spiegel, Leproult and Van Cauter showed the metabolic half of this directly: six nights restricted to four hours in bed pushed glucose tolerance in healthy young men into the pre-diabetic range, reversing after sleep extension. The lunch did not change; the response to it did.

What should I actually do about it?
Stop scheduling your hardest cognitive work into it. Put admin, routine tasks, meetings and movement in the dip, and protect your genuine peak — which for most chronotypes sits late morning and again around 4pm.
The walk is the highest-leverage single item. Movement damps the modelled meal drag by up to 30 per cent through insulin-independent glucose disposal, and it works best delivered before the dip arrives rather than as a rescue during it.
- Move deep work out of the dip rather than trying to power through it
- Put a short walk immediately after lunch, before the drop rather than during it
- Keep protein and fibre in lunch on days that need the afternoon
- Use the dip deliberately for low-stakes admin you have been putting off
Is caffeine the answer?
It masks the dip rather than removing it, and timing matters. Caffeine has a long half-life, so an afternoon dose to fight the slump can measurably degrade the night that determines tomorrow’s slump.
That is the trap worth naming: fighting today’s dip with a late coffee is a loan against tomorrow, and sleep debt is the single heaviest input to next-day capacity. It is a genuinely negative-sum trade if it becomes a pattern.
